Psychology is a broad discipline engaging with knowledge and methods from across the natural, humanistic and social science traditions. The particular emphasis in this course is on a social psychological perspective where the social and cultural world is internally connected with the formation of human life. As such, the theoretical perspectives presented in the course are placed in their historical context and relate to the social and cultural worlds in which human experience and agency unfolds. Whilst the course is grounded in western perspectives on the self, subject and society, it will place these in the context of other major systems of thought, especially Eastern and indigenous approaches.
